Matinicus Island Plantation, Maine
Town Administrator
Matinicus Plantation has an immediate opening for a full time Town Administrator.
Matinicus Island is 20 miles south of Rockland, Maine on the outer reaches of Penobscot Bay. We are a small community of summer residents and few year around residents, with independent and diverse interests. Matinicus has a fishing
history and has become a generational summer home to many. People from other parts of the country and world like to call this unique place home no matter what their driver’s license may say. You can reach Matinicus by Penobscot Island
Air out of Owls Head, Maine. The Maine State Ferry Services has a limited schedule Matinicus that can be found on their website.
It is an exciting time on Matinicus. We are seeking an administrator who wants to live and work on a small island and
play a central role in helping build a unique sustainable community. This position involves planning, budget development, grant writing, problem solving, and supervising a small team of part-time staff and volunteers.
While the administrator will report to – and be held accountable by – the Plantation assessors, candidates must be able to work independently on a day-to-day basis.
1. The Plantation takes great pride in our history and ongoing commitment to a sustainable future. We are seeking a candidate who would enjoy the challenge of planning, organizing, and running major development projects on a remote
island. Examples of projects might be the re-development of the harbor area to ensure we can weather the winter storms, or to develop a plan to attract more year-round residents.
2. Provide supervision and guidance to part-time staff to ensure the town is able to efficiently serve the community while ensuring the Plantation remains in compliance with federal and state regulations.
3. Play a key management role in the Municipal Electric Company co-ordinating employees and volunteers.
While grant writing experience is not necessary, the ability to write and communicate well is critical. The job will entail the identification of funding opportunities at the federal and state level, grant writing, and frequent presentations to the assessors and community.
The management of major development projects requires a sound understanding of financial management and budgeting.
Candidates should be computer literate and comfortable working with “Office”-like products such as Word, Excel and Quickbooks.
We do not require candidates to have prior experience as an administrative assistant. The Maine Municipal Association
offers training days and we would expect candidates with no experience as a town administrator to attend such training.
This is a position for someone looking for new and unique challenges who wants to make a difference for their neighbors and their community.
Pay: Starting @ $50,000 per year plus benefits and assistance with finding housing options, depending upon experience and the range of responsibilities taken on.
Work Location: Matinicus Island
